WHAT IS AN AGING LIFE CARE MANAGER?
Aging Life Care Managers have degrees in a human services related field and/or are licensed nurses who advocate for our clients as well as for families who are caring for older relatives or disabled adults. They have extensive experience in areas such as nursing, social work, counseling, public health or psychology with a specialized focus on issues related to all forms of dementia, the aging process, chronic disease management, complex medical conditions, mental health, special needs, and various disabilities.
Aging Life Care Managers (previously known as Geriatric Care Managers) have extensive knowledge about the costs, quality, and availability of resources in our community. The Aging Life Care Association (ALCA) is our governing entity and members are required to adhere to ALCA’s strict Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. The Aging Life Care Manager may also have one of the four approved ALCA certifications or are working towards certification. Aging Life Care Managers differ greatly from “self-proclaimed” individuals asserting to be patient advocates, senior advisors, senior navigators, or even geriatric care managers. ALCA members must meet stringent criteria set forth by the association, including higher education, extensive work experience, continuing education, and certification requirements.
